Respiratory Care

Overview

Respiratory care is an allied health specialty that provides a wide range of therapeutic and diagnostic services to patients with heart and lung disorders. Respiratory care is for patients who suffer from asthma, COPD, emphysema and other lung diseases and is practiced under medical direction. It is specifically focused on the prevention, assessment, treatment, management, control, diagnostic evaluation, education and care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities in the cardiopulmonary system.

Lung diseases are some of the most common medical conditions worldwide. Usually, smoking, infections and genetics are responsible for lung diseases. The lungs are a complex apparatus that expand and relax thousands of times a day to bring in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide. Diseases like asthma and allergies can cause inflammation in the airways, which may lead to wheezing and shortness of breath. Those who suffer from more complex lung diseases like COPD, have the inability to exhale normally, which causes difficulty breathing.

Nebulizers are helpful breathing devices that can be used for both children and adults. They come in a variety of different shapes and forms to suit the needs of the patient. Nebulizers use oxygen, compressed air or ultrasonic power to break up medical solutions and suspensions into small aerosol droplets that can be directly inhaled from a facemask or mouthpiece of the device.
